Guest bedroom styling

Are you lucky enough to have a spare room that you use for guests or when your partner snores? Is yours looking like a welcoming space for that unexpected guest or is it becoming a storage room or lets just chuck that in there for a moment to sort out later and shut the door type of room? I think we are all guilty as charged on that one. If your anything like me then it’s an ‘oh cripes’ moment and end up dashing around picking up piles of clothes and discarded bags and shoes before your guest arrives.

So its time to turn that room back into a welcoming space that your guests are going to love. Think of it as a little retreat; somewhere that you would like to stay, a home-from-home feel, a little sanctuary of peace and calm with a massive dose of welcome.

First things first, time to get your clutter out. The room needs to be empty and free of your own personal items so either put them away, sell or take to a charity shop – you’re going to feel so good when you have done this part!  A good clean and then the fun begins…

Step back and take a good look. Do you need to give the room a fresh coat of paint? This is definitely a good way to give your room a new look and it’s inexpensive as well. Think about how you want the room to feel and make sure it flows with the rest of the house.

Lulworth Blue has been used in this room and it certainly works its magic to make you feel like you have been on a long meandering walk, taking in the fresh sea air. This mid-blue comes from the shade of the sea at beautiful Lulworth Cove, Dorset. Lulworth Blue sits happily alongside similarly clean Wimborne White and Parma Gray. Despite its brightness, it can promote deep and peaceful sleep when used in low lit rooms, especially when used on both walls and woodwork. www.farrow-ball.com/paint-colours/lulworth-blue.

Sage Green is a beautiful hue to use for a bedroom it has both the warm and cool elements to it and brings the feelings of serenity and contentment to your guests. Instead of painting your walls, add a statement ceiling in the bedroom, as the design duo of 2LGstudio.com did here. It draws the eye up and keeps things interesting. This shade of sage green is Fern Leaf from www.behr.com.

What could be better than the adaptly named Sulking Room Pink from Farrow and Ball. A romantic and muted rose pink to cast a glow over your skin. Not to be seen as overtly pink, but rather a muted pink with enormous warmth, its powdery feel makes it incredibly soft and easy to use with complementary tones. Sulking Room Pink is evocative of the colours so often used in boudoirs, a room named after the French “bouder” – to sulk.

What’s next?

Painting is done and now to style. Look at the furniture that you have and ask yourself what your guest will need. A comfy bed, side table, chest of draws.. anything else just clutters up the room. This doesn’t have to cost you a fortune either. Just use what you have, chairs, old tea chest and stools can be used as side tables. Bedframes and chest of draws can be sourced from auction sites, free stuff and furniture charity shops. You will be surprised at what you can find or how you can upcycle the pieces that you have.

A comfy mattress is a must, microfibre duvets that are light as a feather and scrumptious pillows that make you drift off into a world of bliss. It’s best to stay away from feather just in case anyone has an allergy to them, and don’t forget to get a mattress and pillow protectors. Good bedding, cotton or linen that, again you can pick up in the sales, Homesense or Ikea. Just keep an eye out for cotton that is grown with less water and pesticides than conventionally-grown cotton so you can sleep well – with peace of mind and perfect for your consciously minded guests.

A few other essentials

A few other essentials are needed to complete the room, ceiling and bedside lights and a mirror. Wall lights that you can plug in are a godsend and a brilliant space-saving idea. These are from www.ikea.com
The ceiling light adds texture to the room as its made from bamboo giving out a soft glow that gives your room a warm and welcoming atmosphere. Again from Ikea. For the mirror go large to reflect the light around the room and chose what’s suitable for the room.

Finishing touches

Finishing touches to make your guest feel welcome. Magazines or books, carafe with glasses, plug sockets that are easily accessible and of course towels and toiletries. Your guest is going to feel well and truly welcomed and spoilt. Fingers crossed that they will leave so that you can get to enjoy your guest room as well.
