Interior Design Trends AW17/18
We’re well into autumn now and there are come clear interior design trends that we’re all loving! We’re talking about them on social media, Pinterest is full of them, journalists are writing about it and more importantly, we’re trying them out in our homes. Some trend predictions never made it our of the designers’ studio, but some become how we decorate and personalise our homes.
This blog is the intro to a 5 day blog series about the AW17/18 trends that we’re all trying our right now in our homes. Here’s what we’re going to cover:
Rustic Scandinavian
‘Scandi’ is the interior design trend that just won’t end, and its got to be the first trend we talk about. But Scandi has another side… Scandinavian… I know what you’re thinking, same thing! But it isn’t… ‘Scandi’ for me is more gelato palettes with polished pine side tables and shinny copper baskets. I’m talking about rustic, true Scandinavian style. It’s raw, purposeful, cosy and inviting all in response to the climate of the Scandinavian environment.
Millenial Pink
Pink is back and its not going anywhere anytime soon. But the pink coined as ‘millenial’ is actually quite a specific shade. The only way to describe it is a light and delicate salmon pink with warm tones. ‘They’ say that Apple formalised the trend with their rose gold phone which may have led to rose gold becoming joint Pantone colour of the year in 2015. They also believe that it may have all started with the decor shown in Wes Anderson’s movie The Grand Budapest Hotel; a retro-kitsch decorated luxury hotel all decorated in various shades of pink! Wherever it came from its one of the interior design trends that are here to stay and we love it! We’re painting our walls pink for the first time in decades and we’re buying pink sofas and curtains.
Botanicals
According to the stats, we’ve never owned so many house plants! Especially the 18-35 year old who are clearing out Ikea and Aldi promotional shelves on a weekly basis. We love plants!!! They clean the air, make a home feel in touch with nature and they look fabulous!
However its not just the plants themselves, its the inspiration they bring. Botanical prints, fabrics, wallpapers, all add to the botanical effect.
Dark Styling
We couldn’t miss out the dark walls. The trend is still going strong and across the colour ranges; dark green, dark blue, grey, and the paint manufacturers are still extending their ranges to accommodate our demands.
Dark styling creates atmosphere. It helps to visually lose the boundaries that walls create and accentuates colours and light.
Colour Blocks and Paint Effects
No longer do we paint entire walls just one colour. I’m not talking feature walls either, I’m talking about creating shapes with blocks of colour, fighting with masking tape to create patterns and borders, and using colour to makes spaces and areas.
Paint effects have become popular too as part of interior design trends. Home made ombre wall effects, stamps and stencils are all part of the mix!
