A bit about Art Deco

Art Deco is design style that began in the optimistic 1920’s and lasted until the downturn of the 1930’s. Following on from Art Nouveau, Art Deco also focused on geometric shapes inspired by the natural world. Art Deco is quite difficult to distinguish sometimes, largely because it is essentially a melting pot of influences from fauvism to cubism. Trend setters were famous names that you now hear on Antiques Road show like Lalique who is famous for coloured glass vases.

In the home in the 1920’s people were beginning to see small luxuries entering homes and design began to influence packaging and products more than ever before. Lighting played an important role with some Art Deco lamp styles still in production today. Equally the ‘Jazz Modern’ style we associate with Jazz and private clubs; archways, glass chandeliers and upholstered velvet seating and has been around ever since.

Art Deco’s demise was largely bought about by the outbreak of World War 2, when the luxurious, indulgent styles it was associated with seemed out of place and rather false given world events. However the Art Deco style has seen resurgences, once in the sixties and again just recently with the return of golds, velvets and geometric design styles beginning to enter our homes. Today I’d say it isn’t purist Art Deco that we’re embracing, but I’m enjoying a respectful nod to it almost 100 years after its beginning.
