Japandi Makeover
We’ve recently been working on a project to turn a lounge diner into a Japandi dream and we’re ready to share our plans! The lounge-diner is separated by a fireplace with a log burner. The lounge has a south-east facing bay window and the diner has french doors that open out onto a courtyard garden.
We were keen to use Farrow and Ball’s Bancha, one of the new colours launched last year. With oriental influences, we felt it would be the perfect colour to create the Japandi look.
This mid-century modern green is a darker version of the much loved archive colour, Olive. Perfect for those who want to embrace stronger colour in the home, its sober tone creates rooms that feel calm and serene – especially when combined with soft pinks and browns. Named after Japanese tea leaves, Bancha, like a cup of green tea, provides a feeling of security.

We also selected ‘Green Blue’ for its colour-changing properties, looking green in some lights and blue in others, which would work well with the dual aspect room.
The plan is to paint the rooms in reverse. The lounge would have Bancha green walls and Green Blue on the ceiling, and the dining would have Green Blue walls and Bancha on the ceiling. This would tie the rooms together but also give them their own personality. We selected Bancha for the lounge as the lighter room but also for the colours comforting and soothing tendencies, perfect for a relaxing space.
The Diner would be pared back to create a dining space by the French doors. The home’s music owner has a stunning piano which would need to use the other end of the room, pushed up against the fireplace wall.
The lounge would focus around the fireplace with a coffee table in the centre. The floor is carpeted in this room so we’re planning to include a rug to create a statement with the floor without changing the carpet.
To create the Scandi part of the Japandi vibe we’re planning to include some of one of our favourite designer’s cushions; Orla Kiely. We’re also getting some fabric to makeover an existing bench cushion and create cushions for dining chairs.
In terms of lighting, we’re planning some wall lights and floor lamps to create focus areas of the rooms.
