A bedroom makeover
Styling by Sally Tonkin, Photography by Anna Tonkin for Green&Mustard
Earlier this year we were approached by a local couple who had bought a house in Southsea. The house is a victorian two-up, two-down just a short walk from the beach and local high streets. Prepped for sale by the previous owner, the house was a real blank canvas, calling out for some accentuation of it’s character and style. Ben and Giles both have busy jobs and didn’t have time to redecorate. Sally was keen to take the reigns and design a bedroom to suit the couple.

The process
The project kicked off with a consultation meeting with the client, discussing likes and dislikes. Sally spent some time with the couple showing them inspiration from our Instagram feed and also from magazines and Pinterest. Once a style and rough colour palette had been agree, it was mood board time for Sally.
Firstly looking at colours, Sally reviewed several paint companies. The room had a large south facing window and an original victorian fireplace on the opposite wall. Approximately 3m x 3m in size, making good use of the space and light was key. Fortunately the room had a built-in cupboard offering storage, negating the need for a space-stealing wardrobe. Sally opted for Farrow and Ball paints to make best use of the light with its powdery finish – guaranteed to create some lovely effects in bright sunlight.
Picking colours
Working with the client, colours were picked. Calamine pink for the ceiling (painted ceilings are totally on trend at the moment!) to create interest in a relatively small space. Inchyra blue for the walls and mouldings, a deep green-blue that will catch the light perfectly and create a cosy feel in a really light, south facing room.
Mood boards
Having discussed likes, dislikes and ideals, Sally started to plan the room layout and select items of furniture to buy that would create the desired style and be on budget. Sally drew out a plan, which was then worked up into a digital mock up.
Keeping to a simple colour scheme, Sally specifically selected a bed, bedding, mirrors, lighting and bedside tables. There was also a budget for accessories which could be agreed later.
Once the design was agreed, Sally got to work. As the room wasn’t too large, Sally decided to paint the room herself, including the ceiling! Some pictures of before and during the painting process are at the bottom of this post.
Thank you Green&Mustard for creating such a wonderful space for us to enjoy. The paint colours work so well together creating a cosy feel, especially fitting for the approaching nights soon to be drawing in this autumn. We especially enjoyed working with Sally who, always professional, helped us envisage different styles that might work with our initial thoughts. Mood boards and paint testers proved very helpful in this area. The fabric of the bed creates further warmth and complements the surrounding colours without making it ‘stick out’ which we were keen to achieve as the room is only modest in size. One of our favourite aspects has to be the hanging lights above the bed, each on a separate dimmer switch. Perfect for a midnight read. Behind sit the circular mirrors, reminiscent of cabin windows aboard a ship (a subtle hint of Portsmouth & Southsea, which we love).
Thank you once again Green&Mustard. I think we may well be in touch again when we embark upon the next project.
With thanks and warm wishes,
Giles & Ben
Awww thank you!!!!!
Wow! What a beautiful transformation. This colour combination works so well. I love the blue, it’s modern yet relaxing and I would never have thought of using pink for the ceiling but it’s perfect. The lights placed in front of the mirrors is such a lovely touch too, a kind of modern take on the candle sconce…reflecting light and creating atmosphere. Just beautiful.
Thank you so much ?
This has really inspired me to be brave and paint my ceiling pink instead the usual white. Thank you very much Green and Mustard.
